Each
session consists of 15 cycles of distraction alternating
with relaxation. Each distraction and relaxation phase
is controlled through a computer Programmed Logic
Controller (PLC). The protocol calls for 60-seconds of
distraction and 60 seconds of relaxation. The table
retracts until it reaches the baseline pretension level
of 20-24 pounds.
Treatment time on the table is approximately 45 minutes.
Patients with an inflammatory component to their
condition should be placed on an appropriate
anti-inflammatory drug during the course of treatment.
Patients are instructed to refrain
from exercise programs, physical therapy, and any work
hardening programs while receiving VAX-D therapy.
Flexion and/or rotational movements that increase
intradiscal pressure and annular torsional/sheer forces
must be avoided.
The use of some adjuncts such as application of heat or
ice may be utilized in the immediate post-treatment
period on occasion to relieve shoulder or lumbar muscle
spasm, if recommended by the treating physician.
The routine use of ice, heat, electrical stimulation and
spinal adjustments and/or manipulation, etc. prior to,
or after VAX-D treatment are not a necessary part of the
treatment protocol. |
